Sarcoma Foundation New Zealand News Letter

Welcome to the first Sarcoma Foundation New Zealand (SFNZ) News letter! We hope to produce a News letter every 3 months or so, to keep everyone up to date with the charities activities. This news letter will be a bit longer as we introduce the charity and our goals.

Background

SFNZ was set up by a group of clinicians and patients after recognising the need for an information and advocacy resource for patients and families dealing with a diagnosis of sarcoma or other bone and soft tissue tumours in New Zealand.

Our initial goals were as follows:

We initially raised money for the website by running Round the Bays in 2023, with Support from clinicians and their whānau, but significantly by Ethyn, one of our sarcoma patients, and his family and friends.

What’s coming up?

Webinar Series

We are proud to announce a series of patient focused information Webinars focusing on the different types of sarcoma with guest speakers from the New Zealand sarcoma community.

Our First webinar will be on the topic of retroperitoneal sarcoma and the newly set up North Island retroperitoneal sarcoma service. We are lucky to have Dr Carla Pajak agree to give the webinar, which will be hosted by members of the SFNZ board on the 5th of November at 8pm.

Dr Pajak is one of the country’s leading retroperitoneal surgeons and has helped shape the North Island service.

Goodfellow Symposium

Our Chairperson, Andy Johnston, will give a talk on sarcoma and when to refer to the GP group in Auckland at the 2025 Goodfellow Symposium. During 2025 we aim to target GP and allied health events to raise awareness.

Round the Bays 2025

We hope to repeat the success of the 2023 RTB, by completing it again in 2025 to raise money and awareness. This year we would like to get as many patients and families involved as possible and will have an area set aside at the end for socialising with other Sarcoma patients and the team from the charity and other members of the Sarcoma teams from North and South Islands.

Our Charity ambassador Cameron Suafoa has donated an Auckland Blues jersey signed by members of the team, which will be awarded as a prize to the winning fundraiser.
